The Church Organist provides organ and piano music and accompaniment for scheduled worship services and other activities in support of the music ministry of the church. Having a pivotal role in the musical life of the church, this individual is a strong team player, being a full partner with the ministerial staff and the Music and Sacred Arts Director of FCC (hereafter Music Director).

Job Description

This year-round position is defined as part-time, salaried (no overtime pay). Expectation of attendance is for all Sunday worship services and weekly rehearsals with the Chancel Choir, Gospel Choir, special music presentations, and special services including (but not limited to) Christmas and Maundy Thursday. The work is done cooperatively with the Music Director and all church singers and instrumentalists. As a part of the musical leadership team of the church, the Organist is expected to advocate for the music program.

Job Requirements

  • A degree in music is desired.
  • Familiarity with the Christian faith and worship.
  • Experience in church worship, with organ and piano music and hymnody (understanding and familiarity with various types of worship are preferred).
  • Flexibility to play in services that include all types of worship music, using the 3 manual Allen MDS 41S digital organ and Petrof upright piano.
  • Knowledge of the instruments and keyboard ability sufficient to play hymns, songs, and 
anthem accompaniments. Ability to sight-read and improvise is desired.
  • High degree of competence on organ and piano, and the ability to accompany groups and 
individuals.
  • Knowledge of basic music theory and ability to perform simple transpositions or 
harmonizations.
  • Willingness to rehearse sufficiently to maintain a high quality of music.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of people.
  • Ability to take direction from the FCC Pastor and the Music Director, and work as a team member.
  • Ability to communicate well and in a friendly manner with the church leadership, church 
choirs, instrumentalists, and members of the congregation.
  • Desire to maintain a constant program of self-improvement.

Accountability

The Organist is accountable to the FCC Music Director, who is the head of the Music Ministry of the church. This individual will need to notify the Music Director a minimum of three weeks prior to planned absences (preferably as soon as known) to allow for scheduling of a substitute organist.

Successful compliance with the General Employment Practices detailed in the church's Personnel Manual (including background check and drug testing) must be fulfilled.

An annual performance review will be conducted.


Responsibilities:

  • Support the church's worship environment through the well-prepared execution of music presented by the choirs and other musicians.
  • Serve as accompanist for the Chancel and Gospel choirs in regular and special rehearsals and performances as assigned.
  • Facilitate congregational singing and worship through the excellent execution of hymns and other songs.
  • Assist, rehearse with, and accompany, as appropriate, special music performed by instrumentalists.
  • Plan, select, prepare, and perform preludes, postludes and offertories, according to the needs of the 
worship services.
  • Serve as accompanist for other choirs, ensembles, and soloists, when needed.
  • Play for weddings and funerals, as requested (and upon availability), being permitted to 
receive additional compensation from the parties involved.
  • Maintain an accurate account of organ needs and maintenance, and notify the Music Director of such needs and estimated costs.
  • Assist the Music Director in finding a substitute organist for Sundays when not available.

Salary

Negotiable, consistent with candidate's education, experience, and skill level.

Director of Music-Choir Director-Organist

St. John Chrysostom Episcopal Church seeks a Director of Music/Choir Director/Organist to lead our worship music, lead and direct our choir, and set a vision for our music program in concert with the Vicar—Estimate 15 hrs per week.

The organ at St. John's is a Custom 3 manual Rogers Trillium Masterpiece digital organ with 4 ranks of pipes and 108 digital stops installed in 2008, and we desire someone who can engage this instrument to its full capacity.

Weekly duties include:

  • Service music and anthem planning with the Vicar.
  • Choir rehearsal-currently Sunday 8:30AM before 10AM service. Potential for a midweek rehearsal or other special rehearsals as dictated by the Church season. Piano rehearsal accompanist provided.
  • Play organ for prelude, service music and postlude for 10AM service every Sunday.
  • Plan and direct choir anthem(s) each Sunday with accompaniment on piano by our accompanist or on the organ by the Director of Music.
  • Plan music for and prepare choir for Choral services during Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week and Easter. This may entail added rehearsals as needed.
  • Provide organ music for funerals and weddings as scheduled, separate fee for these services.

Compensation:

  • Parttime position, compensation $30,000- $35,000 based on capacity to fulfill all the required duties and expectations.

Baritone Section Leader

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Baritone Section Leader needed to sing in a very small but dedicated and friendly choir. This position is ideal for a student or retiree.

SKILLS NEEDED:
Good sight-reading is desired, but not necessary.  The music repertoire ranges from traditional to contemporary.

WEEKLY DUTIES:
Rehearsals are on Tuesday nights from 6:15 to 7:30 PM.  On Sunday, there's a brief warm-up rehearsal from 9 to 9:20 AM.  The service starts at 9:30 and ends at 10:45.  It's basically singing the hymns, the Offering Anthem, and a short Introit song before the service starts.  The songs are fun, with good arrangements, and are not too challenging.

OTHER OCCASIONAL DUTIES:
There are additional services such as Ash Wednesday, Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday), Good Friday, Christmas Eve.  These are short, 1-hour services but are not mandatory.  There is no Christmas Day service unless it falls on a Sunday morning.  There would also be opportunities to sing a solo or duet now and then during the year or to Cantor, leading the congregation with the liturgical music (not required).

SALARY:
Pay is per event: $35 per rehearsal and $35 per Sunday service (averaging about $70 weekly for both events).

Section Leaders 

Christ Episcopal Church

Christ Church, Coronado is seeking two section leaders, a soprano and a tenor to assist on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings, as well as Christmas, Holy Week, Easter and other occasions, as needed. The positions are available now.

These are not soloist positions. Candidates should be experienced choral singers with excellent reading skills, and a schedule that will accommodate regular attendance. The usual commitment is Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30, and Sunday mornings from 9:00 to 11:30. The Sunday sung service is at 10:00 A.M. The choir director is Michael Morgan, who is well known in San Diego as an accomplished educator, musician and a dynamic conductor.

Currently, the stipend is $20.60 per hour for 2.5 hours on Thursday and 2.5 hours on Sunday. Payroll is processed twice monthly.
